Judge’s Ruling: Method of Placing Strong Mayor Initiative on Ballot is “Unconstitutional”

On Thursday January 21st, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster issued his final decision on the legality of the so-called Strong Mayor Initiative, declaring it “unconstitutional.”

“The Government Accountability and Charter Reform Measure is anti-democratic. The City Attorney, City Clerk, Police and Fire Chiefs, and the City Treasurer should not serve at ‘the pleasure of the Mayor’ - they serve all Sacramentans. This measure grants the mayor more power than should be vested in any one office.”

“This badly written measure was paid for with special interest money, and crafted in secret by developers and other special interests. This is not how most voters believe we should be making wholesale changes to the city charter and the fundamental principles under which decisions are being made.”
