On Thursday January 21st, Sacramento Superior Court Judge Loren McMaster issued his final decision on the legality of the so-called Strong Mayor Initiative, declaring it “unconstitutional.”
We've seen it before. Complicated ballot measures, loaded with hidden meaning, dramatically changing important public policy and put on the ballot by professional signature gatherers paid for with special interest money. During the campaign, complicated issues become empty sound bites paid for by well-heeled contributors.
Next June, Sacramento voters can reject a ballot measure that is an example of why the initiative process is sometimes ill-suited to making complicated policy decisions.
While the Government Accountability and Charter Reform Measure sounds simple and straightforward, it's anything but. This measure, also known as the “Strong Mayor Initiative,” gives Sacramento's Mayor more power and control than any other mayor in the entire state.
